Frequently Asked Questions About the Library

Information about the Library

South Park Township Library's roots reach back to 1833 and the private library of John Moore, a resident of the area now called Library. Around that time, Mr. Moore began collecting money to expand his library and make it available to his neighbors. The library's collection grew to 2,000 volumes. Residents of the area paid to use the library and the funds generated were used to purchase new books. This neighborhood group of library users formed the "Library Society".

In 1960, the Windover Hills Woman's Club founded the first public library in South Park. Housed in a building on the site of what is now Windover Hills United Methodist Church, the library charged adults $1.50 for membership, but children could receive library cards at no cost. As time went on, the South Park Township Library made the decision to no longer charge residents for its services.

The Library is housed in the lower level of the municipal building and currently boasts a collection of over 56,000 items, including magazines, best-selling fiction and non-fiction books, books on CD, music CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray movies, board games, videogames, playaways, and large print books. Nine (9) computers are available for public use. All nine (9) computers have Internet access. There is also one (1) catalog computer that patrons can use to locate Library materials. The Library has a Consumer Education section for the entrepreneur, the investor and all our patrons. The Library also has a Mind, Body, Spirit section as well as providing access to a growing number of career and job resources that any patron can use.

Resources for children make up more than half of the Library's collection. The Children's Room has a large collection of picture books, books for beginning readers and book and audio-visual collections.

The Library Board of Trustees, the advisory board directly responsible for Library policy, meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the Administration Building in the Municipal Complex. Meetings are open to the public and your input is always welcome.
